(Trainee) Criticality Safety Analyst
Key accountabilities
Criticality Safety - provision of suitable advice and analysis to best practice professional standards
Responsibilities
Undertake criticality safety evaluations and provide advice to existing facilities undergoing operational changes
Advise and support the design team for new facilities and projects in respect of criticality safety, including provision of analyses needed to support staged safety reports
Participate as a criticality analyst in wider activities requiring criticality specialist support including nuclear material control arrangements, incident detector positioning or omission arguments, emergency response planning and fissile component design studies
Assist in the development of criticality safety standards and procedures needed to support projects and facilities
Participate in review, learn and improve processes needed to ensure that AWE identifies and operates best practice arrangements for criticality safety
Acquire the core competences needed to ensure that work undertaken is in line with best practice in criticality safety
Qualifications
At least a 2(1) honours BSc in Physics or equivalent
MSc or PhD with a strong nuclear physics component is preferred
Membership of a Chartered Institute or working towards Chartered Status is preferred
Knowledge
Understands basic nuclear physics to a good degree standard
Understands nuclear transport codes - Monte Carlo and deterministic methods (preferred)
Understands the requirements of fissile operations within a Nuclear Licensed Site
Chemistry and metallurgy of fissile materials and physics of criticality
Risk assessment and hazard identification methods applied to major nuclear plant
Experience
Demonstrated technical competences in nuclear criticality safety in an operational or training role for criticality assessor post (experienced)
Experience of nuclear laboratory practices in an academic environment
As expected for a new graduate, i.e. experience in data analysis and report writing. Working as part of a team (trainee)
Skills
Strong people skills needed to draw out nuclear safety issues and communicate the requirements arising from a criticality assessment
Ability to influence others
Ability to remain focused on the requirements and to ensure their timely delivery
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a high standard of oral, written and presentational skills
Excellent organisational skills
